Identifying deciduous trees and shrubs in winter is a real challenge. At a time when the most obvious morphological characteristics (leaves, fruit) are no longer as accessible as they were during the summer months, the observer must redouble his or her efforts to distinguish between species that all seem to resemble one another. However, it is possible to identify most species quite easily using certain alternative criteria. This guide highlights the most relevant characteristics of buds, twigs and bark, supported by clear, effective visual aids. The 200 or so photographs accompanying the descriptive sheets for nearly 60 deciduous species have been carefully selected to clearly present the sometimes subtle characteristics that are often necessary for identification. This guide is intended to be an easy-to-use, concise and uncluttered tool, with a strong emphasis on visual identification, designed to quickly distinguish the main forest species of southern Quebec. This book is aimed at amateur naturalists, biology students and professionals who need to carry out inventories and characterizations of natural environments during the winter season.
